Sun Boxes - Sun Boxes 7"

Sun Boxes is a very interesting ambient/field recording project that originates from a solar powered sound installation by Craig Colorusso. They've just released a recording consisting of two tracks recorded by Kevin Belli in Massachusetts. Very relaxing and minimalistic, perfect music for all kinds of situations/environments. Here's an excerpt from their About section, but be sure to check out the rest of their website to find out more about them.

"Sun Boxes are an environment to enter and exit at will. It’s comprised of twenty speakers operating independently, each powered by the sun via solar panels. There is a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box continuously. These guitar notes collectively make a Bb chord. Because the loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap and the piece slowly evolves over time.

The sounds of Sun Boxes have been described as both soothing and energizing. A unique combination of adjectives often used to describe yoga, or meditation. When experiencing the piece, Sun Boxes allows the participant to slow down, and notice the subtleties of the composition unfold. With the abundance of technology and hustle of this culture it is a much needed concept to not only be allowed, but also encouraged to slow down."

The Body is an interesting two piece sludge/doom metal band from Rhode Island that I just can't get enough of since I first heard them about a month or two ago. The atmosphere, the vocals, the mixing, the instrumentation...just the fucking everything on this album is so holy fucking shit. It's like if Jeromes Dream and Earth had a baby and that baby studied under György Ligeti. Pretty amazing shit, go listen.

This is another one of those albums I picked up because of the cover art and was an instant favorite. Cutting Pink With Knives is a very fun defunct band from London. I've jokingly called them "post-punk grindpop" and surprisingly, it's a pretty accurate description of their sound. When you hear cybergrind (well, when I do), you think of Genghis Tron. These guys sound nothing like Genghis Torn, but cybergrind is still the genre if you want to label them under something. Synthy, poppy, funny, dancey, good-times-all-around shit to listen to.

Seditius - Carne da Macello

So Seditius is a band from Italy and Carne de Macello is their last album. That sucks, because I've never heard of these guys until now, thanks to Gio from Rancore Records. Their sound is Hardcore Punk with amazing vocals, not straight up strained screaming all the way through. There's some range to it so that you don't get bored and the songs don't sound all the same. Definitely some stoner rock influence here, the instrumentation is like slightly sped up sludge. Not that wildly chaotic, but like caged rage bouncing around. I'll definitely be poking my head through their earlier releases, as should you.

Music Ruins Lives winter 2011 releases

So I received an email earlier today containing links to three releases by an awesome music label called Music Ruins Lives. The three acts are Planning For Burial, BAD BRAIDS, and Tom Vourtsis. I haven't had a chance to listen to these yet, but they sound very promising considering the current music I've been getting into a lot lately. I'll most likely get around to posting a few words about each release when I get the chance, so look out for that. For now, music. The links were all provided by Music Ruins Lives, so make sure you buy if you like!

Planning For Burial: Very interesting mix here, like drone/doom/shoegaze. Think more of the sweeping landscapes of Have a Nice Life than the dreamier stuff, but still far from either. First track kind of surprises you with black-metal-esque vocals, but you sink into it as the swirling dust of sounds settles. Second track is definitely softer, less vocals and more of an ambient/minimalistic drone structure. Drippy, but in a good way.

BAD BRAIDS: Damn, dem vocals. Maybe it's just because I don't listen to a lot of female fronted bands and I'm not used to them as much, but her singing is quite haunting and comforting at the same time. Tom Vourtsis: Very relaxing, zoning out music. It's sort of like staring at the sun without the glare and with glimmering steel all around you. Uhhhh...it's really hard to describe, as you can see. What better way to start off the new year than to post my favorite release of last year. Conan is a brutal doom band from Northwest England. This shit is the definition of heavy. It's like the full moon crushing your chest in on a foggy night. It gets a bit faster in some parts, but it's still like being dragged through a pig pen through. The vocals are meant to conjure up imagery of towering warriors marching into battle, and it does so magnificently. Unfortunately, all vinyl copies are sold out, but it's still available in other formats. This 4 track, 32 minute EP is monstrous; put this shit on and crush shit.

We've featured Low Places on here before, and seeing as they have this new self-titled, here they are again. This self-titled includes the 3 songs from their EP, Violent Hunger, and 3 new songs. It will be available from Recession Records soon, so look out for it. Once again, the band has been so kind as to provide a mediafire link and they have it up for free on their bandcamp, both being linked to at the bottom. I would go with the bandcamp though because you can choose what format you want, which is important to some people (as it should be).

The first track is a powerful instrumental building up to my favorite song on the entire record, Malcontent. It's almost punishing how the vocalist delivers the lyrics, very cathartic. It speeds up about halfway through, something you'll come to recognize throughout the album. It definitely makes you want to smash shit before slowing back down to an amazing ending. Choir, the last new track is nice and fast, sort of reminds me of I Hope You Suffer. Sleeping In features some great lyrics and delivery, technically sound and, dare I say, melodic. More fastness and ear stabbing with Detached, and The Doors Are Closing closes the record out in a nice fashion.

Overall, I really enjoyed the 11 minutes offered here by Low Places. A nice mix of trudge and slashing combined with one of my favorite new vocalist. Highly recommended and if you think so too, tell everyone you know about them!

Low Places - Violent Hunger

I just received an email from Vince of Low Places about their newly recorded EP, Violent Hunger. Low Places is a new hardcore punk band from Los Angeles made up of members from CTL and Duke Nukem Forever, both very great bands. The first track starts off slow and sludgy, a little like old school NY hardcore. Then it speeds up and the vocals just fucking rip across each track. Really good shit; visceral. Dhal has a very tough sound to try and describe and/or label. Maybe that's a good thing. To me, this album is the soundtrack to every trippy-as-fuck dream anyone has ever had. Or maybe music to listen to while going on a diving expedition of ancient city ruins. The strange sounds you hear during hypnagogia. It fits all those things, and probably any other fey situations or feelings you can think of. Some of the tracks have this creepy crawly voice accentuating the dysphoric ambiance created...this shit is beautiful. This is their only release and that makes me very sad. Listen, for your own good.

If you don't know who this band is, you should feel bad. I've been listening to this short record almost constantly for the last two weeks, the two songs are just that fucking good. A little more calm than their other stuff, this 7" goes great with sitting on the steps and enjoying a smoke.

Here's some more 90's emo goodness for you, such a great decade for music as a whole. Bob Tilton was a band from Nottingham, England that lasted from '93-'99 and made some amazing music. I fell in love with this band after one listen some years ago, the raw emotion conveyed in each of their songs is fucking beautiful. Such a great vocalist as well. To me, Crescent is their masterpiece and should be in every fan's collection. I may post it sometime but it's pretty easy to find so that's why i uploaded this 7" instead. Enjoy it!

Nature and Organisation - Beauty Reaps the Blood of Solitude

I've been gradually getting into neofolk for a couple of months now, it has mainly drawn me with it's ability to combine elements from modern genres such as ambient or industrial music with the traditional concepts of folklore and classical music, in order to create something truly emotive and unique. Nature and Organisation is a very good example of the formentioned. It is a project of Michael Cashmore, who has been a member of Current 93 since the 1980s. This LP contains guest appearances from well known names in the genre such as David Tibet(Current 93) or Douglas Pearce(Death in June), but more importantly some very nice sounds. Beauty Reaps the Blood of Solitude is a very accessible record, that's why I'd recommend it, especially for people who are just getting into this sort of music. Enjoy!

Ticonderoga is a lovely band from Raleigh, North Carolina. Their sound is often described as post-rock, although I'm not sure why. What I am sure of is that what they create is simply beautiful and amazingly relaxing. I could just sit and stare at the ceiling for hours while listening to this record. This is top quality indie hipster goodness that your friends will be lauding your oh so eclectic music taste for weeks. Also something nice to play when your lady friend is over...I highly recommend it, one of my favorites regardless of genre.

I had put one of Garden Variety's album here some time ago, but it wouldn't be fair if i didn't show you that split too. This album includes one of the greatest GV songs, sounds more modern than the one on the LP, but in a good way. Side B contains a band called Jejune, I know not much about them but after listening to it a few times I liked them somehow. Here's two EPs from a local band, playing raw, intense hardcore, meaning how this music should be played. First time I saw them live I didn't really know what to expect, but I was simply blown away, especially by screamed out loud, emotion-filled lyrics of their frontman, Dave (I still get the chills everytime I hear 'SO FUCK YOUR BLIND FAITH'). They've played support for such bands as Trash Talk or The Mongoloids and although their fanbase doesn't extend (yet) beyond the borders of the RoI and UK much, I've got really high hopes for this act and cannot wait for future releases, make sure you grab them too.

This release from Examination of the... was a little different from their previous work, which was fast and violent. The Whitest of Elephants is a drawn out intense experience, a more sludge sound is apparent here. Now here is one of the oddest split pairings I've ever heard. On one side you've got the ultra abrasive, raw, chaotic Jeromes Dream. If you've ever heard a Jeromes song, you know there's no other bands in the genre that even came close to sounding like them. Probably most famous for not using mics at gigs, these guys are one of my favorites. The other side has July though, one of the softest songs you'll hear. It kind of catches you off guard after listening to Thirty Dollar Bill, this jangly song with feather vocals floating around in your eardrums will definitely change your disposition quickly. Only the two songs, but definitely worth listening to.

Hi there, this is my first post on this blogspot. Name's Michael and I like weird music for weird people, so I hope I'll fit right in. Anyways, this is not to be mistaken with Cold World, hardcore band from Pennsylvania. This one-man project from Germany combines depressive Black Metal genre with elements of Ambient/Electronic music in order to create a truly misanthropic vibe and live up to it's name. I first came across this demo a couple of weeks ago, during the peak of my fascination with the genre and was automatically sucked in by the atmosphere, especially "The Old Ghost in the Well". For fans of classic BM as much as people preferring more progressive stuff. Although this demo's print was only limited to 100, you can buy ColdWorld's debut album "Melancholie" here.

My Lai - Few Songs

I was absent for some time but something called me to write about this band
on our blog. My Lai, not the one from USA (playing "skramz" probably). I'm talking
about the german My Lai, which nothing is known about. Only thing I could find
about them is their myspace, where they had few songs and photos. Even their label
called Revolution Inside is "internet dead", it's impossible for me to find any info.
I found this band by accident, I was searching through auctions on "polish eBay" and
found some interesting 90s emo, I've bought some stuff I knew from mp3's but something
blinked softly to me. My Lai 7''... what is that? It seemed to be pretty interesting, german emo? 1995? Nice! So I've bought it and that was one of the best decisions in my life. Two tracks there
are amazing. The one called Off Guard is just great but the one on the other side: Independent is my favorite now. I have this vinyl for few days but by this time I have listened to it for hundred times. So, few days later I luckily found their myspace and they had some songs there. And that's what I want to show you. What is more, I'm pretty sure theyre impossible to find, probably out of print and on very limited press (so this rar is probably not even halfly complete). Have fun listening to them!

The Pine - Days Slipping By

Here's another one from the band that could quite possibly be my all time love. I posted their self-titled a few months back, so make sure you get it if you don't already have it. The vocals have always been one of the things about this band that pulled me in, he's able to convey so much feeling without screaming or anything, just simplicity. This record was released in 2004 but sounds like it comes from the mid 90s, not something that's easily accomplished. Every song will take you back to some memory or moment in time and have you singing/moaning along (I hate to say moaning, but I can't think of another word to describe the unique style). Growing Calm Forever slows the pace down and languors melancholistically along with squeaking guitars, pasting itself in the back of your head to make you sad. Child Gone is right after and it's just as depressing, only with a more energetic sound like the other tracks, the vocalist crying out "No more happy, I'm lonely, lost life". Seriously, anyone that listens to this record and doesn't feel a tugging in their chest is devoid of all emotion (which isn't possible, even sociopaths feel, just not for others).

Eldritch Anisette - s/t 7"

I don't know much about this band (I couldn't even find a picture of them) except for the fact that the three songs on this 7 inch are too fucking beautiful for words. The first thing you'll notice is the female vocalist over the twinkly music before breaking out into that raw energy on Suckerpunch. Overlapping vocals and melancholy lyrics make this song one to remember. Pessimism Goes To Work picks up the pace a little, it's the shortest song of the three but still holds its own as far as being a great track. Finally, we have Dissection Of Silence, a six and a half minute adventure that starts out like the previous two. Rolling through memories while smoking a cigarette before stopping the car at the 2: 20 mark and getting out to accost someone. "Ugly and unclean" is my favorite line from this record, with the vocalist straining a bit for the first time. Whispered and spoken male vocals float in the background before exploding into screams, multiple voices converging to create some amazing chaos that brings you to the end of an amazing 12 minutes with a repeated line over and over, a wavering voice that makes it seem like the singer wants to jump out of their skin. Fuck, you've got to hear it for yourself.

Danton - Demo 2006

There's something special about German hardcore bands. Tristan Tzara is top five for me in the screamo genre, as is Killed By Malaise and Danse Macabre. Danton is another great German band that released a demo in 2006 on their own. There is a heavy post-hardcore influence mixed in with screamo that makes for some great transitions and breakdowns. Weg starts off the demo with catchy guitars and wonderful cathartic flashes before winding down after six minutes of pure energy. It's the longest track and my favorite. The next track showcases some fantastic drumming and is a lot more faster and harsh. Radio could almost be considered an instrumental since vocals are sprinkled throughout the track, this is not a bad thing though. The instrumentation on this demo is something worth hearing, everything works so well together that you can tell how close these guys are. I really enjoy the underwater effect, or whatever the technical term for it is, used on some of the tracks, I can't quite explain why though. Kind of...peaceful or maybe maternal I guess? It's in our nature to enjoy that sort of sound I believe. I guess I just like a little of experimentation with different sounds and effects that aren't commonly used in a genre or just in general. Fensterglas has one of my favorite moments on this record at the 2:50 mark, the repetition combined with the drumming, then the pause before it picks back up...just kills me. A very enjoyable and energetic demo on the whole that proves again that the Germans can make some amazing music. It says on their myspace that this demo is sold out, so good luck tracking down a copy.

Boeing - Beta

I can remember buying this album way back in 02 or 03 at some local gaming shop, mainly because of the cool cover art. I was in my middle teens and anything even remotely anime caught my eye, which the cover kind of still reminds me of. Boeing has absolutely nothing to do with japanese culture though, it is one of many projects of Leonel Castillo, an Argentinian musician. Beta has a very chill techno sound, something you can throw on when your friends are over or what have you. This CD actually got me interested into the whole electronic/house scene all those years ago, it's a great gateway into a world most people quickly dismiss. It kind of reminds me of the music they used to play during the bumpers on Adult Swim back in the old days, not too house and pretty funky. I have to stress the funkiness, it's refreshing to listen to something not so abrasive sometimes. As with most music in the chillout/lounge genre, some of the songs can get repetitive, especially when they all run over 6 minutes and the total play time is around 70 minutes. It doesn't ruin this good album though, at least not for me, the songs are not so relaxing that you get bored and not too electronic so that you feel you're in some kind of Nintendo game. Completely instrumental and head bopping inducing beats will have you playing this in the car every chance you get.

Edaline - I Wrote The Last Chapter For You

    Sometimes there comes an album that just knocks you off your feet, make you sit there and listen with your eyes closed and imagining you're in another place. Edaline's I Wrote The Last Chapter For You is one of those albums. At times you'll be in a meadow watching the clouds roll over you while the grass tickles your face when the wind blows. Other times you're in the middle of a busy sidewalk running in the rain chasing something, or being chased. This band from Santa Rosa, California was only around for about 3 years in the late 90s and only had two releases. They cite Elliott Smith as one of their influences, always a good thing if you ask me. Members were also in Desert City Soundtrack, The Velvet Teen, The New Trust, Nuisance, and One Horse Town.

    This full length starts off with Andrea Gail, a great opener because it showcases this band's style, a beautiful mix between mainly twinkly stuff like Stupid Acting Smart and Ryerose with a little of the strained vocals seen in I Hate Myself and Christopher Robin. For the most part, the songs are soothing and energetic with bursts of cathartic yelps that compliments the instrumentation that follows the same pattern. The shortest song runs about 4 minutes and the longest around 8; this album is 43 minutes of nonstop heartbreaking beauty. "Let me let you down" is one of my favorite lines from this album that's repeated throughout This Fabricated Town, a rolling song filled with little stops and killer drumming. Immediately after that is Southern Pacific, which starts off raw and in stark contrast to its predecessor by changing the mood from wallowing around to jumping up and dancing violently before falling back down at the end of the song when the tempo slows down. Thinking Of View closes out the album with a mellow beginning and middle before what seems like a chaotic ending, littered with screams and frenzied guitar playing and a piano being banged on in the background before coming to a rather long pause...and then it abruptly starts back up again before finally coming to a rest.

    Every song is amazing with parts that grab your heart, a solid and consistent album that will quickly become one of your favorites. Put this record on whenever shit seems like too much, your troubles will soon be forgotten or some amazing insight will become clear to you. What I'm saying is, listening to Edaline makes you better looking, better smelling, smarter, and everyone will love you and your boss will promote you and give you a 50% raise and that girl from high school you had a crush on will be outside your window tonight.

Storm the Bastille - Self-Titled 7"

    It’s been a while since I’ve updated, but what can I say, fucking school. I can honestly say that screamo is one genre that I absolutely love, everything about it fills me with such jubilation that I can’t sit still. The screams, the noisy guitars, the pounding drums, it all works so well together. Storm the Bastille is no exception when it comes to creating interesting music that isn’t just your garden variety screamo. Featuring members of Street Smart Cyclist, Boy Problems, as well as others, this band from Bethlehem, PA is still active and planning a full length sometime next year.

    But for now, their self-titled 7” from 2005 is what I want to share with you. It consists of four songs that last for almost nine minutes; short, fast, and violent. The vocals remind me of A Case of Grenada a little at times, but that’s where the similarity ends. Very throaty and in tune with the instruments every time. “You Can Move, But I Have Your Legs” begins with a tingling rhythm that erupts into killer drumming and cathartic screams that make you want to get up and dance, especially at the 1:30 mark. A great track to open with and the ending is perfect. The next track starts off very different, a kind of peaceful melody that’s sort of mathy, but quickly turns on its ear and becomes chaotic and fury incarnate. The repetition near the end is the only kind that you’ll want to hear.

    “Please Do Not Mistake Me For A Woodsmen” doesn’t build up as much as the first two tracks, it gets right into striking the back of your ears. While nothing about it makes me like it less than the others, I would say it’s the weakest song for some reason. “Water Mountains And Stale Rain” starts off with military reminiscent drumming and the vocals that jump out sound the most emotional out of all the other tracks. The two breaks in the middle are constructed so well that they’re my favorite parts of the song. The end is somewhat abrupt and leaves you wanting more; this is definitely a record that you can listen to over and over in one sitting. This self-titled is actually very danceable throughout, something that you don’t really think of when it comes to screamo, most bands make you want to get up and break shit. That’s not to say it’s not as caustic as other bands, it’s just something wonderfully different.

View Of A Burning City - Summer 2004 demo

    The semester started for me this morning, so uploads might be more sparse than usual from me. College is a weird struggle between focusing on your studies to prepare for your life and trying to form new relationships with people you think you have stuff in common with. Music is a little like that in a way, finding the balance between what the band wants to play and what fans want to hear, no matter how small or large the target audience is. I'm rambling here though, not making any sense and just typing as the thoughts form. I like how this blog is coming along though, it's always nice to share things you care about with others. I never understood the concept of keeping bands a secret.

    View Of A Burning City was an emo band that played with such emotion rarely found or expressed through music. They were around from 2002 to 2004, that's all I really know about them. However, I feel I don't need to know a lot about a band to enjoy their hard work, their creation. Especially when a lot of these bands are local and last for only a few years, it's hard to find information, even with the internet. The three songs on this demo seem so personal, so agonizing, that you'll find yourself doing nothing but listening to the lyrics and trying to interpret and relate somehow. Ambient type backgrounds with cello playing, screamed vocals in between strained singing, it's art clashing with chaos. While there are only three songs, they are all over five minutes and never seem too long. The last words on this demo, "Maybe it's time we evolved", are haunting and a perfect way to end the album.

    Basically, here's another band you probably haven't got around to checking out yet, so here's your chance. You can also download all of VOABC tracks at their last.fm page, but you have to do them one at a time and I don't know what the quality is. I could have downloaded them and upped them together for you, but I didn't. This is a must hear demo though, essential even, for fans of the genre. Caustic and thought-provoking lyrics, beauty and art.

Jevgenij - Days Like Shadows EP

    One of the greatest things about the internet combined with independent record companies is being able to discover hidden gems you otherwise would have never even heard of. I've found so many records this way, some of which have become my favorites in my entire music library. I live in a small town in the south, so the local music scene here is full of cover bands and college acoustic acts. We have no record stores apart from the big franchises here, so the only way for me to discover music not found on the radio or television is through the internet. But enough of my whining, let's get to the music, which is one of those gems I was talking about.

    Jevgenij is the work of a Croatian artist(s) who states on their myspace that they want to stay anonymous. All I know that has been released is the Days Like Shadows EP, a four song masterpiece I found about two years ago on a webzine that doesn't seem to be up anymore. Samples taken from movies, what seems to be recordings from NASA, and other multiple sources add a certain kind of ambiance to the songs rarely found in other electronic acts. There are no vocals, just plain horror type music that sends shivers down the spine and raises the little hairs on the back of your neck. The second track, Redrum, is one of the greatest, scariest, and creepiest electronic songs I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. It uses samples from the movie "The Shining", a legendary scary movie that is known for a scene where a little boy keeps repeating "redrum", which is murder backwards, and the famous quote, "Here's Johnny!", which is also used. The song creeps me out every time I hear it.

    The next track, "Untitled" starts off with a sample of a Morgan Freeman quote from the movie "The Shawshank Redemption", followed by a bunch of other movie samples. The music on this track isn't as ominous sounding as the other three songs, it features a rather upbeat loop of synth produced rhythm. It also has a sample from one of my favorite scenes from Full Metal Jacket, the part where the drill sergeant is yelling at the guy from Texas. While the music is simple, the eerie aura created by the combination of all the elements on this EP is unique and definitely worth listening to. Also, the album cover embedded in the files was the biggest version I could find, apologies for the smallness. (If anyone has any information on this artist, please comment!!)

Julia - Julia

Julia was a great band from San Diego that is associated with the great 90's emo/hardcore scene. While I love bands such as The Promise Ring and My Favorite Citizen, I prefer this sound. Their self-titled is a testament to how intense and emotional their music was. Distorted vocals and screams combined with the frenzied instrumentation that rolls back and forth between quiet, reflective moments and exploding bouts of anger, a formula similar bands in the genre used. There's never a dull moment on all eight tracks, never a hint of repetition or filler, this record satisfies the entire 47 minutes. I sometimes catch myself screaming out the lyrics, but that's because I'm an idiot.

While not as raw as their 7", At the Window of Vulnerability, you still get the sense that the band is in agony and straining themselves to produce something this powerful. The first two songs are absolute standouts and sends you tumbling through the structured confusion until you hit the ground with the caustic last track, especially the last minute.

Garden Variety was an emo band from New York (Valley Stream). They existed in 1991-1996 time, and put out some of my favorite stuff ever. Knotwork was an emotive hardcore band from Upper Darby - the surrounding area of Philadelphia. They were active from 1993 to 1995. Their earlier recordings were influenced by 90's straight edge hardcore but this 7" is much more emotive. And in my opinion it's one of the best things that were ever recorded. Amazing melodies mixed up with very emotive screaming vocal gave something, that for me is much more than music.
I couldn't find any site that still sells this 7", so it's probably out of print and it's impossible to get it.

.Nema was a grindcore/hardcore band from Detroit. This demo is extremely good pack of music with lots of samples (like in Graf Orlock). This out of print 1995 demo tape is not their only work, LP which is their only one released called Bring Our Curses Home is available to buy here. Well : fast, noisy, filthy and energetic - .Nema!

Words Mean Nothing was an emo/screamo band from Poland, Puławy.
They started playing in 2005, and split up in 2008 to play in some other bands like Adiafora or Panacea. This demo is their only recorded work, but I can surely say it's one of the best records I've ever heard. It's almost impossible to find now, even the band don't have any copies left to sell, so feel free to download.

members that are now in Loma Prieta. One of my
favorite bands of all time, such a raw and emotional sound.
